So you want to use the iPhone on the T-Mobile network?
I have it working. Yup. Unlimited calling, unlimited TXT & MMS, as well as unlimited internet. All for $69.99/month. I also get all the apps from the iTunes store for free, as well as the ability to tether my phone to my laptop.
Please keep in mind this is for an iPhone 2g, operating system 3.0.
There are many blogs and forums online describing how to accomplish this, however most of them didn’t work. Trust me on this, follow this guide over the rest out there- I think they have outdated information because most of their techniques did not work.
1) First, You need to jailbreak and unlock the phone if this was not already done for you.
Jailbreak= allow third party applications to be installed (i.e. free apps from iTunes store and other customization)
Unlock= allow the phone to work on the t-mobile network.
To do this, you need a program called redsn0w which can be found here.
2) I assume by now your iPhone is now jail broken and unlocked with OS 3.0. Now, to get the internet working you need to login to myt-mobile.com and change your phone to a razor. Once this is completed call customer service and tell them you would like to add on the unlimited t-zones and texting package for $19.99. They shouldn’t give you any trouble about t-zones, but if they do just try calling in to talk to a different rep or tell them sometimes you use your razor so you need to have t-zones.
3) To enable MMS, set up your phone to connect through wifi so you can access the internet. Log in to Cydia which should be on your phone. After it loads up, click on Manage: Sources: Edit: Add: and type in "http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com".
Now you should click on Search and type in “Enable MMS for 2g & 3g”. This will enable MMS on the phone. Other sites will tell you to install ActivateMMS2G but I could not locate this in any repositories, it is gone as far as I am concerned.
4) Now navigate your iPhone to "www.unlockit.co.nz/". Select Continue: Custom APN. When you are in the Custom APN window, type “wap.voicestream.com”. Follow the rest of the instructions and let it do its thing. This step solves the issue of not being able to save the APN settings on the iPhone, which many other people including myself got stuck on.
5) Now, on the home screen, go to Settings: General: Network: Cellular Data Network. You will see the wap.voicestream.com settings here. Under Cellular Data, for the APN, change it to internet2.voicestream.com.
That’s it! All set! I didn’t get into the details on this page, but if you follow this general process, google any other information you need more details about, you should have everything working.
Google for more additional information below (this will open in a new window)
If you want free iTunes apps, you will need to download “installous” which can be found within Cydia.
